The short answer

Strip clubs in London are legal, licensed venues for adults, regulated by local councils, and they usually operate strict no-touching rules with charges that can add up quickly. Knowing how they work before you go in is the best way to avoid an unpleasant surprise at the end of the night.

How licensing works

In most of London, these clubs need a sexual entertainment venue licence from the local council, under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 as amended by the Policing and Crime Act 2009. Licences are normally renewed each year, and residents can object during the consultation. Each council sets its own policy, and some are restrictive. Tower Hamlets, for example, has a nil limit on new venues, while allowing existing ones to continue.

Licences change, and so does the list of open clubs. Spearmint Rhino's Tottenham Court Road club, for one, told Camden Council in October 2026 that flood damage would keep it closed until autumn 2027 or winter 2028. So before you travel, check the club's own website or the council's public licensing register.

The rules inside

Licence conditions vary by council, but no physical contact between performers and customers is the typical rule. Westminster's standard conditions, for example, have barred contact between performers and customers during a performance. You must be 18 or over and may be asked for ID. Photos are normally forbidden, and security staff will remove anyone who breaks the rules. Treat the performers with respect, and take no for an answer.

Check the charges first

This is the part that catches people out. There may be an entry fee, and on top of that come drinks, individual dances, private areas and table minimums, often at a price that looks small until it is multiplied. Before you agree to anything, ask what it costs and how time is measured, and ask to see prices in writing. Pay as you go if you can, keep an eye on your bill and check your card receipt before you sign or tap.

If you would prefer a quieter evening, our cocktail bars guide has good alternatives, and dinner dates are listed on many of our ladies' profiles.
