What it means

A yoni massage is a slow, intimate form of massage linked to modern tantric practice, centred on a woman's relaxation and her comfort in her own body. Yoni is a Sanskrit word for the female genitals, and in Hindu tradition it also carries a sense of origin and sacred source. That is why people who use the term tend to speak about respect and honouring, rather than about technique.

The idea behind it is that the experience has no goal. Nobody is working towards a result. The aim is for the person receiving to feel safe, unhurried and in charge of what happens.

Consent comes first

Because this is such personal touch, clear consent is the whole foundation. That means talking beforehand about what is welcome and what is not, agreeing simple words for slow down or stop, and checking in along the way. She can change her mind at any moment, and no reason is needed. If it is something a couple want to explore, it should be a shared decision and never something one partner talks the other into.

Comfort and health

Clean hands, short nails and a warm, private room are the practical basics. Intimate skin is sensitive, so avoid perfumed oils, and remember that oil based products can weaken latex condoms. The NHS advises against washing inside the vagina or using scented products there, as these can upset its natural balance.

Massage is not a medical treatment. Claims that it cures trauma, hormone problems or anything else are not backed by good evidence. If you have pain, unusual discharge, bleeding or discomfort during touch, speak to your GP or an NHS sexual health service. If difficult memories or feelings come up, a qualified psychosexual therapist or counsellor can offer proper support.
